If you are looking to care for your trees, one option you may have come across is organic tree care. Just like with organic gardening and food, people turn to organic tree care as a way to take care of their trees without harming the environment or other plants. You can also work with a Kirtland Hills tree company like VanCuren Tree Service to make sure your trees are as healthy as possible.

Organic tree care involves the use of things like natural fertilizer, natural insect and disease management techniques, and organic mulches. These organic products are often used in conjunction with good tree care techniques like proper pruning and watering and soil aeration.

Using organic products helps to not harm the environment but can also benefit more than just the tree or plant the products are applied to. It helps add health, beneficial organisms to the ecosystem since these products use microorganisms instead of chemicals. Chemicals can destroy good organisms in the soil, plants, trees, water, etc. in addition to destroying the harmful ones. When you increase the beneficial organisms, you can create an environment that has less space for harmful organisms.

Organic products also help different parts of the tree. For example, using organic products can increase the tree’s root mass, which will in turn make the tree healthier and stronger. The tree will have an increased capacity for water and nutrients, so you will not have to water them more.

This also helps to naturally boost a tree’s immune system. When the tree receives proper nutrients, its immune system is stimulated, so it is less prone to disease and is healthier and more attractive.

Organic mulch usually consists of materials like grass clippings, manure, sawdust, hardwood bark, wood chips, peat moss, shredded leaves, and mushroom compost. In fact, when organic mulch is mixed properly, it can make your yard look more beautiful too. It can also control the weeds that grow around the base of trees. Organic mulch is a great way to recycle those clippings and leftovers you would normally throw out, and nourish your trees basically for free.

If you’re interested in natural pest control, bringing in helpful insects, like ladybugs, can be a great way to go about that. It helps eliminate pests naturally and creates balance in the ecosystem.

Many synthetic fertilizers are made from things like natural gas and petroleum. While these products deliver many of the macronutrients a tree needs, they do not always deliver the micronutrients as well, which the tree needs too. They may also destroy good microbes, so a tree can’t get every bit of nutrients it needs, just the main ones.

Other benefits include not exposing yourself to harmful chemicals that could potentially cause health issues. Organic tree care and gardening can also increase the nutrients in the food you grow.

Organic tree care can be beneficial for many people. By working with a tree care company in Kirtland Hills like VanCuren Tree Service, you can take care of your trees in the best way possible and ensure their health and safety.

Many beautifully landscaped Kirtland Hills lawns and gardens use mulch as a way to help trees and bushes grow, in addition to enhancing the appearance of the landscape. Tree service companies in Kirtland Hills, like Vancuren Tree Service, can supply mulch and help you use it in a beneficial way. But what is mulch and why should you consider using it?

Mulch is the material, organic or inorganic, that is placed over the surface of the soil. It can help maintain the soil’s moisture and pH, as well as improve its conditions. Experts say it is one of the best things you can do for your trees and lawn. It can help prevent water loss in the soil, minimize competition with weeds, and improve soil structure. It also enhances the appearance of lawns.

Mulch has many other benefits including:

  • Reducing weed germination and growth
  • Insulation- keeps soil cool in the summer and warm in the winter
  • Improves soil aeration
  • Improves soil structure
  • Improves drainage
  • Can reduce likelihood of certain diseases
  • Reduces likelihood of damage from weed wackers and lawn mowers
  • Acts like a more natural environment

However, when used improperly, mulch can be very damaging to trees and plants. Mulch helps soil retain moisture so there is not as much of a need to water trees; therefore, it is important to reduce watering. Excess moisture can cause stress and root rot. Too much mulch can also cause issues with the stem, insects, and diseases. It can also lead to micronutrient deficiencies and toxicities in the soil. Too much mulch can also create habitats for rodents that like to chew on bark. If the mulch is fine, too much can create a potting-soil like substance for weeds to thrive in. It may also cause an odor as it rots or ferments.

To avoid these problems, it is recommended to have your mulch 2 to 4 inches deep to avoid “mulch volcanoes” that cause these problems. Also, make sure to inspect the area where you would like to put mulch. Does it drain adequately? How will plants be affected by the type of mulch you are using? Also, check the mulch that is already present, if there is any. Perhaps instead of putting down new mulch, you just need to break up the matted layers to refresh its appearance, or pull back the mulch if it’s piled against the trees.

The type of mulch you choose is also important because different kinds of plants work better with different kinds of mulch. Mulch is broken down into two categories: organic and inorganic. Organic mulch is preferred by landscapers and is made of materials such as pine needles, wood chips, hard wood, soft wood, cocahulls, leaves, and compost mixes. Inorganic mulch includes stone, lava rock, pulverized rubber, geotextile fabrics. These are not as preferred as organic mulches because they do not decompose. However, they do not need replenished as often as organic mulches. Unlike organic mulches, though, it does not improve soil structure, add organic materials to the soil, or provide nutrients.

Mulch is something that can be very beneficial for your yard, garden, and trees, when utilized properly. Tree service companies in Kirtland Hills, like Vancuren Tree Service, can ensure that your yard has that well-maintained appearance, that gives your trees all the nutrients and care they need.

As an experienced Cleveland tree company we have seen it all and are here to share some advice: Homeowners have been taking care of their trees in the same way for years, so it is no wonder why people may not know best practices to keep your tree at its healthiest. When you use some of those old methods, you may not know it, but you may be doing more harm than good to your trees.

Let’s find out which practices are actually encouraging or hurting your tree’s growth.

Mulch Mountain

Mulch is one way to keep your trees hydrated. It also serves as a way to moderate soil temperature while simultaneously controlling weed growth. But is there such a thing as too much mulch?

Yes! Adding a pile or mountaineering the mulch around a tree trunk will suffocate it. This locks in too much moisture which weakens the tree’s bark and leads to a weak foundation. The proper way to mulch around trees is to leave a moat about 2 or 3 inches away from the tree trunk.

Tree girdling

Girdling is usually used on fruit trees and is the process of taking off a thin outer layer of bark in an effort to produce more fruit.

Although this method may prompt your tree to produce more fruit, it will more likely kill your tree. By taking off a layer of bark, your tree is more exposed to things like bug problems. Also, cutting off pieces of bark hinders a tree’s ability to transport nutrients from the tip of the leaves all the way down to the roots. Avoid this outdated practice!

Closely planted trees

Trees need their space too! Planting trees too close together overcrowds the trees and keeps them from growing to their full potential. Your trees will be forced to fight for water and nutrients and roots will either be stunted or overlap with the neighboring tree’s. Your trees won’t last long by planting them too close together.

Give them the space they need – pay attention to the recommended space between plants and other structures based upon how big the tree is expected to grow.

Looking for advice from a Cleveland tree company? Landscaping your Cleveland property is all about the details: a strategically placed shade tree, nicely trimmed trees and shrubs, not a weed in sight. Even still, you might look at your yard and then glance at a professionally landscaped yard, trying to figure out what that one little something is that makes all the difference.

Edging is an often overlooked, but important piece of effective and attractive landscaping. This technique creates a border and boundary around your garden bed, trees, or shrubs. This way, the organic mulch will be less likely to shift around onto the rest of the lawn. It is also a way to stop growing weeds from popping up.

There are four main types of edging you should keep in mind when edging around your home’s flower and tree beds:

  • Spade-cut edging – This is the easiest and simplest way to edge; all you need for this one is a spade shovel. Use your spade to make a narrow trench about 3 inches deep around your flower or tree beds.
  • Strip edging – Use this method is best used for following curves. You can use plastic or metal strip edging materials and anchor them into the ground. Make sure to leave the top portion of the edging above the trench for effective separation.
  • Masonry edging – For this, you will need concrete, brick, or stone pieces. While it is the most popular choice for edging, it is also the most expensive and will take a bit more time to arrange neatly.
  • Wood edging – If you choose to go this route, you can choose between a range of heights for the wood pieces – from flat boards to round logs. Wood is a good choice if you are looking for an affordable way to edge. Also, the wood that is used for edging is naturally resistant to rot: redwood, cypress, and cedar.

Mulching around your trees is a way to keep moisture available for the roots and provides a barrier from both hot and cold temperatures. Adding mulch to your flower or tree beds also prevents soil runoff, allowing the nutrients to stay in place. When you edge around your garden beds, you are taking the next step in ensuring that your soil and mulch are providing the most benefits for your trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Cleveland Heights tree mulch company suggestions: Have you ever noticed a white, cobweb-like substance on your mulch around your property? It looks quite unattractive, but you are not the only one as it is a common problem. Slime mold, also known as “scrambled egg fungus” or even “dog vomit fungus” will sometimes make an appearance in the mulch in your beds or around your trees.

Slime mold appears with the combination of warm weather, shady spots from trees, and spring rain. As you can guess from its nicknames, it looks exactly like it sounds. It first looks like a bright yellow foam that may cover a few inches up to a foot of space. Overtime, as it dries it turns brown and finally changes into an ugly, sticky, powdery, white mess.

Now that we have identified the gross substance on your mulch, is it harmful to my trees and plants? How do I get rid of it?

While it may look really ugly, it actually isn’t harmful to your plants or trees in the slightest. It doesn’t indicate any sort of bigger problem, nor does it feed or spread on your landscaping. As noted before, it is the result of shade, moisture, and warm weather. Unless you prefer to remove it for aesthetic purposes, it is ok to leave it as it will dissolve into the soil on its own after a maximum of three weeks. If you do want to remove it, just take a shovel to the moldy areas and throw it away, or rake it into the mulch.

Cleveland Organic Mulch Supplier

Because slime mold and other mulch molds are harmless and natural, there is no specific treatment. The best thing you can do to prevent more slime mold from growing near your trees or on your mulch though is to follow good watering care. Reduce the amount of moisture in your garden by not watering shady areas of your yard if there has already been rainfall or invest in a deep root watering system so that your trees and other plants get the perfect amount of water when needed.

Free mulching tips from a Cleveland Ohio Mulch  Company – Mulching your garden beds and the area around the trees at your Cleveland area home looks nice and provides benefits for your trees and plants. If you mulch correctly, you will find that it reduces the amount of weeds, controls erosion, and retains moisture for your landscaping.

Organic mulch provides nutrient-rich soil to help your plants grow. This type of mulch is usually made of previously animal or plant or materials that has been converted into a dirt topper. Due to this, it will naturally decompose over time and is how your pants and trees will get an extra source of nutrients. Before choosing organic mulch though, you should know that because it decomposes it may eventually shift around. Organic mulch materials can also be a place for pests to live if it is distributed incorrectly and too close to your tree.

Here is a list of benefits to using organic mulch:

  • Hinders weed growth
  • Cuts down on soil erosion
  • Encourages development of microorganisms in soil
  • Reduces the spread of soil-borne pathogens
  • Stabilizes temperature of soil
  • Traps moisture and conserves energy by blocking evaporation

Inorganic mulch, on the other hand, are composed of long-lasting materials, sometimes including man-made materials. While you will not need to replace the mulch with a fresh batch year after year, it is more expensive. It is also not suited for all terrains and environments. Call a professional landscaping team, like VanCuren before you decide to cover your yard/garden, tree surface with it. Inorganic mulch options may look like: stones/rocks, shredded tire rubber,

Landscape fabric, or plastic film. Something to consider about stones/rocks is that they both absorb and reflect heat in different areas which could create potentially dangerous heat spots.

Below is a list of benefits to using inorganic mulch:

  • Low maintenance
  • Retains moisture and heat
  • Lasts a long time and doesn’t need to be replaced often
  • Less likelihood of soil rot and pest problems

Whichever option you choose comes down to a consideration of your personal preferences, your landscape/environment, and what is best for your trees and plants. Here at VanCuren, we do recommend using organic mulch due to the longer list of benefits, however there is nothing wrong with choosing inorganic mulch as it does not harm your plants. Cleveland are tree company, VanCuren is here for your tree trimming, tree removal, and emergency tree services needs. Call us at 440.338.5005 when you are ready to start a new project.

  • Have you added mulch to your trees before?
  • Have you waited too long and never got around to actually mulching?
  • Or maybe you mulched last year.

Do you need a Cleveland Heights Mulch company? With spring just around the corner, it is time to start thinking about mulching your trees. Whatever point you are at, mulch is more than just something to put around your trees to make them look nicer. Mulch actually helps keep your Cleveland Heights trees healthy!

Even if you surrounded your trees with mulch last year, it’s time for some fresh material as it is probably not doing much to help your trees at this point. Mulch helps keep your tree healthy in many ways. It keeps the soil cool and moist so that your trees retain their water levels while preventing weeds from popping up on your landscaping. Mulch also stops soil runoff if there is rain flooding in the area surrounding your tree so that your tree’s roots stay firmly rooted into the ground.

There are two types of mulch for you to think about: organic and inorganic. Organic mulch is most likely the first kind you think of and see most often. This type of mulch is usually made of wood chips, pieces of bark, shredded leaves, or compost and will need to be replaced periodically to keep it fresh and healthy for your trees. Inorganic mulch like landscape fabric and stones are great for low maintenance and long-term, but they provide no additional vitamins to your trees. We at VanCuren recommend using organic mulch to provide the most value to your trees.

Apply mulch Correctly

  • Place mulch near your tree approximately 3-4 inches thick
  • Push away mulch from around the trunk and base to make a donut shape. It should be about 4 inches away from the base of your tree all the way around
  • Spread out mulch to 4-5 feet in diameter in the surrounding area

Not sure of what kind of organic mulch is best for your Cleveland Heights tree? Call VanCuren today to get your questions answered. We have provided tree services like tree removal and tree trimming in the Cleveland Heights area for 30+ years!

At Cleveland mulch company All Organic Mulch, we create mulch using previously living materials, such as bark and wood fiber. We feel that triple ground is the best overall type for providing nutrients back into gardens and flower beds while providing an aesthetically pleasing result.

Most customers know that a good mulch will help to prevent the growth of weeds, but there are many other benefits to having all organic mulch in your gardens!

  • Organic mulches decompose over time. This decomposition adds vital nutrients to the top layer of the soil, and eventually results in layer of rich, fertile humus.
  • Mulch also protects the soil in beds from compaction due to heavy rains or exposure to excessive sun and heat.
  • Mulch helps retain oxygen in the soil.
  • The correct amount of mulch provides erosion control by absorbing rainfall and preventing water runoff.
  • Additionally, your soil will retain moisture much longer as the mulch slows down evaporation.  During periods of drought, the mulch will retain moisture longer than beds having no mulch applied.
  • Mulch also provides a habitat for beneficial organisms such as earthworms and certain spiders which assist in minimizing insects that harm flowers, vegetables and other plants.
