As a Cleveland tree service company, we repond to storm damage every year. While we don’t have to worry about the dangers that come with bad winter weather in Cleveland Heights, summer weather comes with its own set of weather warnings. Now that it’s summer, we should think about double checking our trees before summer storms hit. August is the month when most storms tend to hit Cleveland Heights and there are a few things you can do to minimize the likelihood of tree or property damage before the storms arrive.

Prune Dead and Unsafe Branches

Check for any weak or dead branches on your trees as these can cause a lot of damage if it is snapped off by a strong wind. Look up into the canopy and see if you notice any dangling branches. Also keep an eye on your tree for any branches that are rubbing together. Never underestimate the damage that is caused when weak or dead branches mix with a severe storm.

Remove Rot and Cavities

While pruning dead or unsafe branches may be obvious, don’t neglect the trunk and roots of your trees! Take some time to inspect your trees – any cavity or unnatural bulge in your tree weakens the structure of the tree. If you find any rot in the roots, trunk or branches, call an expert to come and assess the situation. A tree with a lot of rot may already be unhealthy enough for tree removal. Decaying or infested trees pose great danger to you and your home no matter the weather conditions.

When it comes to summer tree safety, early detection is the key to helping your trees survive. If you notice any potential problems, it is best to call a tree expert to inspect as soon as possible. Timing can make all the difference when it comes to keeping a tree alive.

At VanCuren Tree Services, we care about the health of your trees and the safety of you and your home. There are many benefits to regularly having a professional Cleveland Heights tree trimming company trim trees on your property. The most obvious being that you can avoid expensive removal of diseased or rotting trees. What you may not yet know, however, is the best time to start the tree trimming process.

Trees need an occasional trim for the same reason that people need their hair trimmed to chop off dull, split ends or reshape their hairstyle. No matter how healthy your trees look, they should still be trimmed every once in a while to keep them in good shape.

The following are the seasonal guidelines for when to trim your trees:

Winter

Trimming during the dormant phase of a tree’s cycle is typical and give way to a fresh outburst of growth come spring. Our tree trimming professionals at VanCuren recommend that you should ideally wait until the harshest winter weather has passed.

Spring

As you know, this is the biggest time of growth for a tree so it is best to wait until summer to trim. Let the trees grow out, fruit, or flower naturally.

Summer

This is an ideal time to tidy up damaged, hanging or broken twigs and limbs. When you trim right after growth has been completed you help slow or redirect tree growth, which is good for the tree. If you have a flowering tree trimming in mid to late summer will heighten the production of flowers.

Fall

It is recommended that you stay away from any tree trimming at the beginning of fall because the tree will take longer to heal after a trim. It is best to wait until right before the winter before the dormant phase. However, there are exceptions and no two trees are alike.

You trees are an important part of the beauty of your Cleveland Heights home. We at VanCuren want to help you take care of our trees. We have professional Cleveland arborists who can visit your home and offer a free evaluation for your tree trimming needs.
